Plant Grafting at the Chicago Botanic Garden

Jorin Graham, Evan Eifler, and Stephen Zhou hosted a plant grafting outreach event at the Chicago Botanic Garden. They engaged visitors through interactive discussions on grafting’s history, purpose, and techniques, supported by posters, graft cut examples, and living grafted trees. The program was part of the “Scientist in the Garden” series.

Do cicadas have a choirmaster?

This year, for the first time since 1803, the two most extensive broods of periodic cicadas in Illinois will emerge together. We will delve into how these cicadas coordinate their emergence and discuss the evolutionary origins of this behavior. We will also show that the underlying phenomenon is not that different from what we see in other organisms, such as Canadian lynxes and oak trees. Lecture by Jorin T. Graham.
